Our lower elementary program is a mixed age community of first through third grade children. This thoughtfully prepared environment has been created with purpose to nurture curiosity and encourage independent learning. As with all Montessori classrooms, our elementary program is child- centered. It is a place where children can work independently or in small groups. Our Lower Elementary class starts just as our Primary class, with lessons given by the classroom guide as the starting point. Once a lesson has been introduced, the child is able to explore and discover at his/her own pace.
Within this peaceful, engaging environment our students will explore math, language, science, social studies, geography, music and art. Lessons will move from concrete to abstract. Working within this mixed age environment, younger students find mentors in the older students, while the older students have leadership opportunities.
Students will be given work plans on a weekly basis. This gives the students direction with guidance from the teacher. Allowing a completely individualized learning environment in which, the student develops the concept of accountability and time management.
At Milton Montessori, our Lower Elementary students discover answers instead of being given answers. This highly motivating environment helps encourage and develop :
- Critical thinking
- Independent research
- Problem solving
- Sense of community
- Curiosity to learn
